The Foundation Of Faith

The Foundation Of Faith

Key Scripture: Romans 10:17

Faith must have a foundation. You do not simply speak from what you think; the foundation of your faith should be the Word of God, for faith does not ignore God’s Word.

Romans 10:17 — “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

The Word of God, therefore, gives faith the base and foundation on which it stands. This means that without the Word of God, we have a weak foundation of faith.

A disciple who wants to have strong faith must become a student of God’s Word so that he can build biblical faith.

FAITH MUST BE DEVELOPED

Faith is not something we should expect to remain the same throughout our Christian journey. Faith must be developed and strengthened.

HOW TO DEVELOP FAITH

Faith comes and grows as we:

Hear the Word of God
Believe the Word
Obey the Word
Practice the Word
Stand firm in the Word during trials
Testify of God’s goodness

Every time you trust God in a difficult situation, you are learning how to hold your shield of faith higher and higher.

FAITH OVER FEAR

In Mark 4:40, Jesus asked His disciples why they were so fearful and why they had no faith. This helps us understand that the absence of faith makes room for fear.

Faith and fear cannot rule someone’s heart at the same time. When faith comes in, fear steps out; and when fear comes in, faith steps out.

A disciple who operates in fear has their eyes focused on the circumstances and situations around them. But a disciple who has the eyes of faith focuses on how big God is and magnifies the faithfulness of God.

The one who has faith will ask:

“What has God said in His Word?”

But the one who is operating in fear will ask:

“What if God doesn’t help me?”

This helps us understand that, as disciples, fear should not have the final authority in our hearts. We must overcome fear with faith by keeping our eyes on God, standing on His Word, and trusting in His faithfulness.

Build your faith on the Word.
Develop your faith through obedience.
Strengthen your faith through trials.
And let your faith speak louder than your fear.
